Author/Screenwriter D.S. Bailey breaks new ground in reality fiction with his latest novel titled, UP IN FLAMES.  The author's horrific details drawn from the days and events of  the 1917 race riots in East St. Louis will make your heart pound as you take a realistic journey through an unforgettable period in African American history.  Meticulously researched and well written, UP IN FLAMES explores yet another dark side of Blacks who struggled every day for survival.  D.S. Bailey tells his story with a powerful voice, in hopes of bringing his readers back to a time that many would like for us to forget.

DESCRIPTION: In a mid-western city, labor disputes between white factory workers and owners was the buzz of town.  Good jobs were at stake and Blacks migrated to the city during World War I from the south for work.  A lie circulated that Blacks planned a 4th of July uprise.  An angry meeting was held  An unidentified Ford sped through the Black end of town, spraying bullets into unsuspecting homes.  Blacks gathered outside and rallied.  A second Ford car came through the neighborhood, of the same color, but this time, it was an unmarked police car.  Blacks took aim and fired, killing  two police officers.  The burningand murderous nights that followed became inevitable.
UP IN FLAMES is a fictional story surrounding the actual race riots that occured in East St. Louis, on July 2, 1917.  Bands of angry white men, women and children lynched, burned and shot Black people, holding the south-end of town under seige.  The documented total that were killed were nine whites and thirty-nine Blacks.  Recently released reports state that the totals are more than ten times that amount.  The days following, scores of Blacks crossed bridges that led into St. Louis, Missouri.  Many would never return.  East St. Louis, as it is known today, never fully recovered.
